2019 E-Council Retreat
We strongly encourage members of the 2019-20 E-council (stewards, caucus chairs, and E-board members) to attend this year's retreat, an incredible opportunity to get the stewards together, bond as a community, practice our Union organizing skills, and have a great time!
This year's retreat will be happening in Sunriver, 2 hours' drive from Eugene into the mountains (near Bend). We will leave to head out there on the afternoon of Friday September 20th and will stay overnight (at an epic house) on Friday and Saturday the 21st, returning home on Sunday September 22nd.
Given all that is happening in the Union this year, with the wrap up of bargaining, continuing to garner strong member support, and looking forward to the future of the Union, as many stewards as possible should attend this retreat. And besides, it'll be fun!
I got a contract in DuckWeb from my department for this term/year. The contract is expired, right? (We held a funeral!)
Yes, the 2016-19 Collective Bargaining Agreement is expired, and has been since March 31. However, we’ll continue to work under the old contract’s agreements until we reach a new agreement with UO and ratify it.
Will I get paid while we’re still in mediation if the contract is expired?
We will continue to get paid under the old contract until the new one is settled. Any raise you receive will not be paid until the contract is settled, but you will receive your paycheck at the end of September as scheduled.
So…I should sign the new DuckWeb contract from my department?
Yes, once you’ve confirmed it’s accurate! This contract is still valid under our previous CBA, and this is how you’ll get paid once term has started back again.
If we’re working under an expired contract, do I have to pay tuition?
No. Your tuition waiver is part of the contract, which we’ll continue working under until we reach a new agreement with the university.
What about my health insurance?
Because this is part of the CBA, it follows the same rules as above: you’ll continue to receive your health insurance premium coverage as outlined previously.
How likely is it that we’ll have a new contract before school starts?
That depends upon the university's willingness to bargain at mediation with us. So far, they have not been very agreeable nor have they offered us any substantial new money for this bargaining cycle. They still insist on "paying" us more by shifting money around from fees, and they’re refusing to commit to paying the 95/5 split of health insurance premiums for the upcoming year(s) of the contract. We will not stand for any of these sorts of games with our funding to mislead our current and future graduate employees. We hope to reach an agreement soon, but we remain committed to bargaining in the best interests of the membership.
So mediation is ongoing?
The bargaining committee and the university have met three times already this summer, and we have two more mediation sessions scheduled before school starts. While we would like to get closer to a deal, it’s currently unclear whether we will settle anything before school starts. However, all of us will continue to get paid for our work under the old contract until this new contract is settled.
2018-19's Record Membership!
Due to your dedicated organizing, we reached record membership (83%) for our 40-year history in 2018-19. In addition to boasting a wonderfully invested and active membership and despite the loss of fair-share dues, we ended the fiscal year in good financial shape!
