There is some momentous graduate student labor history happening right now up and down the West Coast, initiated by the recent wildcat strike of UCSC graduate employees as a demand for a COLA, or cost of living adjustment. Many other University of California grads have joined the strike or offered solidarity in the form of work stoppage or sick-outs. The graduates at UCSC have been on a wildcat strike now for over two weeks, and last week the administration of the UC responded by firing around 80 workers from Spring Term appointments. This is only a new height of vicious retaliation from UC administration, which has included (but is not limited to) hiring cops at the price of $300,000/a day to help “break” the strike and intimidate and harm workers. Moreover, this most recent retaliation via withdrawing funding has severe consequences especially for international grads at UCSC. As the wildcat strikers continue to fight for COLA, I am hoping that we can come together as the GTFF to show our solidarity with West Coast workers. So, we are organizing a mass Solidarity Spam of phone calls and emails as a collective action that both demonstrates our support for the UCSC grads, and might help them achieve their goals by putting pressure on their administration. As we said many times during our own bargaining campaign, our working conditions are students’ learning conditions. The refusal by the UC administration to treat these important and life-saving demands with the respect they deserve, undermines the student’s learning potential by depriving them of the very important graduate labor upon which they depend.
The Solidarity Spam will occur this Wednesday, March 4th from 10am-11am. We will have two options for participation: (1) we will host an in-person Phone/Email Bank at the GTFF Office with coffee and some breakfast goodies, or (2) you can participate remotely by calling and emailing from wherever is most convenient for you! Let's flood those phones and emails in a meaningful and impressive way!!! Please RSVP here if you are willing to show your support for the wildcat strikers by participating in this Phone Bank either in-person or remotely.
You'll receive more information when you RSVP, including a “script” for the callers and emailers to follow. This action will also be on the E-Council agenda for tomorrow, so if you have any questions please feel free to email me directly or contact your steward. Thanks in advance for y’all's support on this action!! It’s so crucial that we show up for our neighboring colleagues during times of difficult and intense struggle.
